Submission Guidelines

What are we looking for?

We love a great read about our shared world, about politics, people and places. Our mission is to publish engrossing books which engage with the issues of the day. Everything is political, so we publish across a range of genres, both fiction and nonfiction.

When in doubt, have a look at our books and consider whether it would fit. If it has the slightest political slant and (most importantly) is impossible to put down, then we would love to read it. In addition, please note that we are primarily interested in authors based in the UK and Ireland.

What are we not?

We don't publish the following: poetry, self-help or spiritual, erotica, children’s literature, picture books, art books, cookbooks, academic, educational, textbooks or screeds. We also don't republish self-published books.*

To make a submission, please email contact@claretpress.com with a 25 page sample and cover letter. The cover letter should include:

  • CV. Any previous publishing history is of particular interest.

  • Pitch – put in a brief explanation as to why you think your manuscript would be a good fit for Claret Press. How did you hear about us? Have you read any of our books? Do you have any thoughts on marketing for the book, etc.

  • Synopsis of the manuscript, around 350 words.

The sample must be the first 25 pages of the manuscript. It should come as a .doc or .docx file.

Once you’ve sent your submission, we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. If we like what we see, then we’ll request the full manuscript. We do not offer unpaid feedback.

Please bear in mind that we are a small team which publishes around five books per year. We read and evaluate every submission with care because we know how much effort goes into writing a book, and therefore cannot give an exact timeframe for when we will contact you after first submission. It can take anywhere between two weeks to two months, and even longer during busy periods.
